training benefits

11/04/2012

the benefits of my approach to teaching music occur on many levels

these are explained below with reference to my popular Everyone Can Sing voice workshop

benefit level 1 – best practice

best practice vocal techniques are taught - students are shown ...

  • how to listen carefully to sing in tune and how to feel the pulse of the rhythm to be in time
  • how to breath using the diaphragm to sustain long notes and how to preserve their voices from damage & project their voices using the open-throated calling technique
  • how to arrange songs to make them come to life and how to present those arrangements to an audience in an engaging way
  • how to connect with the emotion of the song to move people by it's beauty

students have an excellent learning experience - but there's more ...

benefit level 2 - fun, fun, fun
the ambience is relaxed and informal and I both encourage humour and use it constructively - humour aids concentration and retention

students have an excellent learning experience and have a great time - but there's more ...

benefit level 3 – mind, body & soul

  • by learning a little about composition and arrangement and by listening more open-mindedly and attentively, students develop a deeper appreciation of music
  • the course is quite active, we use Yoga exercises to warm up, breathe aerobically and (those than can) work standing on their feet much of the time - this keeps us all fit and healthy
  • singing is known to be therapeutic - we relax, laugh a lot and even cry a little sometimes - it's heart-warming work

students have an excellent learning experience, they have a great time, they enjoy music more and feel good - but there's more ...

benefit level 4 – confidence

  • all good training will develop confidence to some degree but, because confidence is so important in singing, I also deploy my unique confidence-development process (the 'engine')
  • my engine raises confidence by positive reinforcement - the reinforcement of  existing and developing strengths
  • raised confidence helps people in their work and other areas of their lives - it reduces stress and improves well-being
  • confidence raises performance too - the results are outstanding and, because we cultivate a non-competitive ambience, this is highly motivating for the whole group

students have an excellent learning experience, they have a great time, they enjoy music more, feel good and are highly motivated by achieving outstanding results - but there's more ...

benefit level 5 – real community

  • groups, clubs and choirs get together because of a common interest - but there are often differing views within groups as well as petty power struggles
  • my confidence building engine has another benefit - it bonds groups and builds a true sense of community, based upon respect
  • my 'engine' has been also used in industry as a highly effective team-building tool - in fact it's the best team-building tool I've seen

students have an excellent learning experience, they have a great time, they enjoy music more, feel good, are highly motivated by achieving outstanding results and experience a sense of real community - but there's more ...

benefit level 6 – positive outlook

  • another spin-off of my engine is that it develops a positive outlook - the glass is half full, not half empty - and students leave with a sense of the value of this positivity
  • what's more: the engine ticks over long after the ignition key is removed - so the benefits are lasting, long after the workshop has finished

for all the above reasons, many students comment that it has been a life-enhancing experience - but there's even more ...

benefit level 7 - leadership
those students who are themselves parents, teachers and managers see an example of leadership which does not rely on authority, control and criticism - but is gentle, caring and empowering and yet achieves outstanding all-round results, well-being, motivation, positivity and true community

for all the above reasons some students comment that it has been a life-changing experience
