poem: The Ballad Of Thomas Moore
The Ballad Of Thomas Moore
come gather folks and hear my story
of a brave soldier named Thomas Moore
who suddenly found fame and glory
and inspired a nation in need of cure
t’was in the year of 1920 when baby Thomas
was born to father’s pride and mother’s joy
but those cute feet were meant for walking
and made a man of this tender boy
young Tom was in the army taught
to march and skills a soldier needs
then off to war to fight oppression
and be decorated for his brave deeds
but a captain’s work is ne’er done
Tom’s finest hour was yet to come
late in life he set a challenge
to walk his garden one hundred times
and raise funds for our health services
when they were stretched beyond their means
at ninety-nine his frame was feeble
but Tom’s spirit was of sterner stuff
saluting soldiers eked out his strength
he put one foot forward and just didn’t stop
Tom won the hearts of our nation
as thousands turned to millions gifted
his humble courage richly rewarded
his spirit giving hope to everyone
so when you’re down and feeling daunted
when the road ahead seems dark and long
remember the story of our hero
the modest man we call Captain Tom
put one foot before t’other
and just don’t stop ‘till the job is done
first the left and then the right
the left again then right once more
left right left right left right left right
left right Cap’n Tom left right marches on
