I had the privilege of meeting the late, great David Schnaufer at two festivals in Kentucky in 2000, thanks to Nancy Johnson Barker for setting up my first Kentucky tour
the first live performance of Dan’s adventurous minimalist solo dulcimer composition Bullet Train at Bardstown Baptist Church, Kentucky as part of the 2014 Kentucky Music Week festival (KMW)
after playing solo in my concert for Nashville’s Grand Old Dulcimer Club in the Turner Hall, Nashville, I was joined by the brilliant dulcimer player Stephen Seifert, whereupon we improvised several duets off the cuff, with no preparation whatsoever
“Not easy to categorise; trad material presented with considerable classical skill on guitar and mountain dulcimer, but gently enhanced with technology. One of his best tricks is to use a long echo and then play a duet with himself. In other hands this would come over as an amusing gimmick – the effect from Dan is seriously musical. In demand in the USA for workshops as well as performances, which may give you a hint of what to expect.
For UK concerts Dan can bring his tree backdrop – to enhance the visual appeal of the stage – and for local concerts to Olney, he can also bring the blue background panels (they fill the car and require a separate trip) – the panels not only look good and hide instrument cases but they also absorb noise and help with the sound on stage.
